10 Lessons My Parents Taught Me About The Value Of Working Hard
It takes 10, hours of dedicated practice for a person to become a world-class talent in a given field, or so said writer Malcolm Gladwell in a book. It also helps to have intensely dedicated parents, according to a new study by University of Nebraska-Lincoln educational psychologist Kenneth Kiewra and three former graduate students. To learn how parents cultivate talent in their children, Kiewra and his students interviewed the parents of 24 youth with national or world-class standing in their area of talent. The group of young elites included ice skaters with Olympic medals, world-champion baton twirlers, top-rated chess players, collegiate volleyball players, prize-wining musicians, a pre-teen author and a national spelling bee champion. The study differed from past research because it focused solely on the roles of parents, rather than the child or her mentors. It also gathered "real time" information from parents who were still tending their talented offspring, instead of relying on retrospective accounts. The interview responses were analyzed and organized into themes relating to previous research.

It takes strategic actions in the right direction to get there.
Growing up, I tried not to pay too much mind to the comments made by friends about how my mom was never the one to pick me up from school or how my dad was always traveling. Of course it did. However, after spending a full year away from both of my parents, I have come to realize all the lessons I learned from having not just one but two parents who have worked full time throughout my life. This is a letter to the two most influential and important people in my life, and the reasons I am thankful they work as hard as they do. This letter is long overdue, primarily because I am sure you have spent a great deal of your lives, and probably all of mine, worrying about whether or not you would ever hear how I truly felt about your busy work lives.
